How to Get a High Score in Snake: 7 Tips That Actually Work

Published by FawaNews Games

Snake is one of the most deceptively simple games ever created. The rules take five seconds to learn, but getting a genuinely high score can take hours of practice. After countless playthroughs, here are the seven strategies that make the biggest difference.

1. Hug the Walls Early

When your snake is short, the walls are your friend. Keep close to the edges and work in a loose spiral pattern inward. This leaves the centre of the board open for later when your snake is long and turning room is scarce.

2. Never Chase the Food Directly

Beginners always take the most direct path to the food. The problem is that a direct path might box you in three moves later. Always look two or three moves ahead and plan a route that leaves you an escape path after eating.

3. Use Slow Speed to Learn Patterns

Our Snake game includes a slow mode for exactly this reason. Use it to practice your spatial awareness. Once the patterns become instinctive, bump up to Normal and eventually Fast.

4. Keep Your Tail in Sight

Many players focus entirely on the head and lose track of the tail. The tail moves toward the head with every step. If you lose track of where it is, you will accidentally steer into it. Practice keeping the whole snake in your peripheral vision.

5. Create a Coil Pattern at High Lengths

Once your snake takes up more than half the board, switch to a methodical back-and-forth coil: go to one wall, turn, go to the opposite wall, repeat. This controlled sweep ensures you never trap yourself.

6. Do Not Panic

The single biggest score killer is panic. A sudden change of direction when you feel cornered is usually what ends the run. Breathe, look at the board, and find the methodical exit instead of the desperate one.

7. Play in Short Sessions

Snake is surprisingly fatiguing on your attention. After 10 to 15 minutes your reaction time and planning sharpen, but past 30 minutes fatigue creeps in. Take breaks and you will find your average score climbs over time.
