Sudoku for Beginners: Rules, Strategies, and Solving Tips

Published by FawaNews Games

Sudoku is one of those puzzles that looks intimidating until the moment it clicks. Once it does, you will wonder how it ever seemed hard. This guide explains the rules and the two core techniques you need to solve every easy and medium puzzle.

The Rules in Plain English

You have a 9×9 grid divided into nine 3×3 boxes. Some cells already have numbers filled in – those are your clues. Your job is to fill in the rest so that every row, every column, and every 3×3 box contains each number from 1 to 9 exactly once. No number repeats in any row, column, or box.

Technique 1: Elimination

Look at an empty cell. Check its row, column, and box. Cross off every number that already appears in any of those three groups. Whatever is left is what can go in that cell. If only one number is left, you have found your answer. If several remain, move on and come back later.

Technique 2: Single Position

Pick a number – say, 7. Look at a 3×3 box. Find which cells in that box could possibly hold a 7 (the ones not blocked by a 7 in the same row or column). If only one cell in the box can hold a 7, put it there. Repeat for every number in every box.

Start with the Most Constrained Cells

Look for cells that have the fewest possibilities. A cell blocked by eight different numbers in its row, column, and box can only be one thing. Always solve the most constrained cells first and use their answers to constrain neighbouring cells further.

Use the Hint Sparingly

Our Sudoku game has a Hint button that fills in the selected cell from the solution. Use it once or twice when genuinely stuck to get momentum back, but try not to rely on it – the satisfaction of a clean solve is worth the struggle.

Start on Easy

Our Easy setting removes 35 clues, leaving 46 filled cells. Medium removes 45. Hard removes 55. Easy puzzles can always be solved with elimination and single-position alone. Start there until both techniques feel natural.
