Minesweeper Guide: From Beginner to Expert

Published by FawaNews Games

Minesweeper looks random but it is almost entirely logical. The difference between beginners and experts is not luck – it is pattern recognition. This guide walks through the key patterns that make the game click.

Reading the Numbers

Every number tells you exactly how many mines are in the eight cells surrounding it. A 1 means one mine nearby. A 3 means three mines. Use this to deduce which hidden cells must or cannot contain mines.

The 1-2-1 Pattern

When you see 1-2-1 along an edge, the mines are always under the two cells adjacent to the 2 that are not shared with the 1s. This pattern is one of the most common in the game and once recognised it saves huge amounts of time.

Flagging Strategy

Flag mines as soon as you are certain of them. This lets you safely click the remaining cells adjacent to a fully-accounted number. Right-click to flag in our Minesweeper game.

Always Start in Easy Mode

Easy mode gives you a 9×9 grid with 10 mines. The first click is always safe in our version. Use Easy to build your pattern recognition before moving to Medium (12×12, 25 mines) or Hard (16×16, 50 mines).

Corner and Edge Rules

Cells in corners have only 3 neighbours. Cells on edges have 5. This means numbers in corners and edges are much more constraining than numbers in the middle of the board. Focus your deductions here first.

When You Have to Guess

Sometimes there is genuinely no logical way to resolve a section. When forced to guess, pick cells that are adjacent to the most revealed information – they give you better context if you survive. Accept that a small percentage of games require a lucky guess and do not stress about it.

Test your new skills on the board.
